How to get a Chinese Drivers License

Since January 1. 2007, China has allowed people without permanent residence to drive in China. It involves a test to be taken on a computer and if you pass with a score of 90 or above you get a license valid for six years.

You need to bring the following.
Passport with valid visa for China 
Valid driving license and Chinese translation of same, signed by the translator. 
Bring someone who can write Chinese

On the Shanghai Driver's Licensing Center you will go through short medical test; blood pressure, hearing, vision (including test for colour blindness). You will also have your picture taken. You need to fill in an application in Chiense and the you can take the test. Please be aware that the waiting list can be several months.

It's recommended to use an agent if you need the license fast.

Service charge: 5RMB
Authorization Fee: 10RMB
Written test: 40RMB (if it is the first time)

5RMB +10 +40 RMB RMB = 55RMB

The license can only be taken upon arrival in China, and must be done in person at the address below:
